Scripture is our map (likeJoseph) are our examples. CAREER CHOICE vs. DIVINE CALLING A career choice is often shaped by aptitude, opportunity, culture, family expectation, or economic necessity. It answers the question: What can I do to earn a living A divine calling answers a deeper question: What has God formed me to do so that His purposes are fulfilled through my life? Scripture teaches that God is intentional about each life. Jeremiah1:5(KJV) says,“ Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee
”That verse frames calling as pre-existent—part of God’s design. Ephesians 2:10(KJV) adds, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. ”In short: God prepares people for purposes. Practical difference: A career may satisfy needs and use your talents. A calling produces fruit that lasts (John15:16) and aligns your everyday work with God’s eternal purposes. You can have a satisfying career that is not your calling—and you can have a calling that begins as a humble job. The spiritual work of this chapter is to help you find where those two overlap: where your skills, passion, and God’s design meet. HOW TO DISCERN GOD'S PURPOSE FOR YOUR BUSINESS OR PROFESSIONAL God gives clues. Discernment is not guess work; it is cultivated by spiritual disciplines, testing, and wise counsel. 1. Scripture and identity Start with identity. God knows you before formation (Jeremiah1:5). When you know who you are in Christ—your new identity as “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood” (1Peter2:9)—you begin to see your work as ministry. Ephesians 4:11–12 shows that God gifts the church to equip saints for service; your marketplace role is part of that equipping.
