The concept involves improving the quality of life and economic well-being of people living in relatively isolated and sparsely populated areas. Despite various policies and programs initiated by successive Nigerian governments to enhance rural development, many rural communities remain underdeveloped. Ilorin South Local Government Area (LGA) in Kwara State serves as a pertinent case in this regard. 1.2 Statement of the Problem Rural areas in Ilorin South are plagued by numerous developmental challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor healthcare facilities, low educational standards, and limited economic opportunities. Government interventions have often failed to produce the desired outcomes due to issues like corruption, poor planning, and lack of community involvement. This study seeks to investigate these problems and examine the potential for sustainable rural development in the area. 1.3 Objectives of the Study To identify the major problems hindering rural development in Ilorin South LGA. To assess the effectiveness of government and non-governmental initiatives aimed at rural development. To explore the prospects for sustainable rural development in the area. To suggest practical recommendations for enhancing rural development. 1.4 Research Questions What are the major challenges facing rural development in Ilorin South? How effective are the current rural development policies and programs? What are the potentials for sustainable rural development in Ilorin South? What strategies can be adopted to improve rural development? 1.5 Significance of the Study The findings of this study will be valuable to policymakers, development agencies, and community leaders by providing insights into the root causes of rural underdevelopment and identifying actionable solutions. 1.6 Scope of the Study The study focuses specifically on rural communities within Ilorin South LGA of Kwara State.
