ABSTRACT The research title is Influence of School Plants on students’ Academic Performance in public Senior Secondary Schools in Zaria Local Government Area Kaduna State. It has four objectives among which are: to determine the effective use of school plant for improving academic performance in public secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State; access the appropriateness of school plant and it Influence in improving students’ performance in public secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State, among others. Research questions and research hypotheses were in line with the research objectives. Government, school heads, teachers, parents and researchers are among the beneficiaries of the research findings. It covers the scope of only public senior secondary schools within Zaria Local Government and the teaching and non-teachings are respondents to the research instrument. Several literatures relevant to the topic were reviewed considering conceptual frame work, theoretical frame work, empirical studies were also reviewed. Survey was used as the research design. The sample for the study was one fifty teachers (150) of public senior secondary schools in Zaria local government Kaduna state. The instrument used in this research was 4-point Likert structural questionnaire with options: strongly agree, agree, disagree and strongly disagree. Chi-square statistical analysis was employed in the study. The findings showed that lack of cooperation between principal and teachers, lack of fund, lack of maintenance culture, use of outdated materials and in-availability of necessary materials to assist principal on supervisory role, combination of other responsibilities with school instruction and supervision will affect the academic performance of students. It helps for individual positive transformation, societal and national development at large, where the child would be a useful to himself, to the society and nation at large. Kaduna state government has continuously encourages the effective teaching and learning in public and private secondary schools. Bass (2019) confirmed that quality education does not just occur miraculously but can be achieve through continuous effort by all the educational stakeholders to put heads together to improve the system. Education is the greatest legacy a nation can give to the citizens. There is therefore no better investment a country could make than in education, this is why one should not remain in different to the gap in our education system The Influence of school plant in promoting students’ academic performance in schools is indisputable. Teaching at any level requires that the students be exposed to some form of simulation. Adekunle, (2008) noted that school plants and teaching equipment means anything that can assist the teacher in promoting teaching and learning. When the students are given the chance to learn through more senses than one, they can learn faster and easier. The effective use of school plant will provides the teacher with interesting and compelling platforms for conveying information since they motivate students to learn more. Furthermore the teacher is assisted in overcoming physical difficulties that could have hindered his effective presentation of a given topic in schools. The main concern of any institution is on plant and administration of facilities, because, effective and efficient running of the system depends on proper maintenance and use of available structural units and facilities. What helps in most of the public school plant which was installed over fifty years ago has undergone wear and tear. This is because they have been used above their estimated age and as such are begging for both minor and major repairs. On the other hand, some of these plants such as building and physical structure are so poorly constructed that they don’t last as they are expected (in terms of human resources, they are so poorly maintained that they are not working effectively). Presently, educational planners, however, are persuaded of the importance of good physical plant planning in the development of an efficient and effective educational programme in all sectors of the educational system. A well-planned and articulated school plant or educational buildings and facilities will not only enhance good teaching practices but also will facilitate learning and improve the academic performance of students in schools. There is absolute need for planning the school buildings and facilities (the school plant), because such planning will enhance the achievement of the aims and objectives for which the school is established. School buildings and educational goals are closely related and interwoven. In other words, educational buildings and facilities must help to achieve the purpose for which the school is established. School plant, otherwise refers to as educational facilities include both human and materials resources which help to facilitate educational program. In the past, little consideration was given to the effect the school plant would have on the teaching- learning process and to the achievement of the laid down educational goals. Accordingly, Oyesola (2000) stated that “well planned and maintained school plant or educational buildings and facilities will not only enhance good teaching process but also facilitate learning”. In his opinion, school buildings and educational goals are closely related and interwoven. School plant enhances the comfort, safety of students and teachers by increasing their performances. School plant enhances the quality of instruction. Oyedeji (2000), citing Adesina (1980), noted that the quality of education received by pupils bears a direct relevance to the availability or lack of physical facilities and overall atmosphere in which learning takes place. The site of schools should be such that accessibility of the school and it situation in relation to other features in the locality is considered. School plant is the space interpretation of the school curriculum, facilitating teaching and learning processes, it is therefore positively related to students’ academic performance. It also ensures effective delivery of school curriculum, standard in educational productivity in terms of quantity and quality of product, rapid growth in a nation’s educational sector and consequently rapid economic growth. School plant as teaching aids are important catalysts of social re-engineering and change in learners. The role of School plants or teaching aids to enhance teaching for desired social and behavioral changes cannot be overemphasized since it is a pre requisite in affecting behaviour of learners of every field. Effective instruction cannot be fully accomplished without the use of school plants and other educational resources. The reason for this cannot be far-fetched; they include advances in technology which ushered in instructional materials especially the projected and electronic materials as the most radical tools of globalization and social development. This has affected the classroom teaching-leaning process positively. The technological breakthroughs include projected and non-projected, auditory, audio-visual and visual electronic materials which are important landmarks in knowledge transfer. (Iwu, 2006). Student’s achievement/performance is considered a vital indicator of good schooling, so the poor performance of students at any level of education has not only led to public outcry, but also educationists have been increasingly occupied in their attempt to identify factors that influence students’ performance in schools. For example, Anamuah-Mensah (2010), an educationist attributed the phenomenon to lack of effective supervision and monitoring at school, lack of motivation for teachers and inadequate number of qualified teachers to fill empty classrooms. 1.2 Statement of the Problem Unfortunately, failure of some schools authorities over the provision and management of the required relevant resources and plants required for effective teaching and learning process in schools led to serious downfall of the system. This problem affected the school plant. It has been apparent that most of the schools did not fully make use of available schools plant and equipment in teaching students. This carelessness on the effective use of this facilities and equipment in teaching and learning common to both the trained and untrained teachers affected the successful academic achievement/performance of students in schools. Poor provision of the required relevant resources such as human, material, financial, time and curriculum resources available in the educational institutions leaves so much to be desired in view of the fact that there have been rapid population growths on one hand and technological advancement on the other hand which most schools have failed to make provision which result in insufficient and inadequate school plants. The selection of site or locations of most school, particularly in the cities are such that encourages interruption of teaching/learning process. Brown (2005) attributed the cause of poor academic performance of students to a combination of factors relating to the school environment, teachers, students and parents. In the same vein, Diaz (2003) found factors such as intellectual ability, poor study habit, achievement motivation, lack of vocational goals, low self-concept, low socio-economic status of the family, poor family structure and anxiety as contributing to educational achievement of students in schools. Thus, it was on this aforementioned that the researcher intends to carry out more research on Influence of school plants and equipment on academic performance of secondary school students in Zaria Local Government Area. The desire to embark on this research study therefore, stemmed from the fact that there is problem of poor academic performance of students in schools. The central problems which are attributed to the students’ poor academic performance in schools’ may be due to poor usage or inadequate use of the available school plants to teach, inability to improve on the needed facilities, equipment, technical expertise, lack of laboratories, workshops, seminars, poor organization of the few available facilities, administrators and teachers attitudes towards the use of the school plants and the weakness of the school administrators in finding solutions to the problems for the influence of misuse of facilities and equipment’s, all need serious attention. This study therefore examines the Influence of school plants and equipment on academic performance of students 1.3 Objectives of the Study The study has the following objectives 1. determine the effective use of school plant for improving academic performance in public secondary school in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State 2. To access the appropriateness of school plant and it Influence in improving students’ performance in public secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State 3. To access the school authority maintenance culture and it Influence in improving students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State 4. To evaluate the role of government in improving school plant for students academic performance in public secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State 1.4 Research Questions The research questions are meant to guide the study: 1. Can school plant enhance the academic performance of students in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State? 2. Will inadequate use of school plants affect academic performance of students in Zaria local government area of Kaduna state? 3. What are the factors that prevent adequate use of school plants in teaching students in Zaria local government area of Kaduna state? 4. Can lack of proper maintenance of school plants affect the academic performance of students in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State? 1.5 Research Hypotheses There is no significant difference between school plant and academic performance of students. There is no significant difference between ineffective use of school plants towards academic performance of students. There is no significant difference between factors that prevent adequate use of school plants and teaching of students. There is no significant difference between lack of proper maintenance of school plants towards academic performance of students. 1.6 Significance of the Study The government, school heads, teachers, researchers and community among others are the beneficiaries of the findings of the study. Parents are also part of the beneficiaries of the research findings, School plant is the space interpretation of the school curriculum, facilitating teaching and learning process. It is hoped that the study will be of benefit for the entire educational stake holders such as teachers, school heads, educational administrators, government parent and community at large. The study will also be an eye opener to the populace on the importance and contribution of school plants in enhancement of student’s education in Nigeria. 1.7 Scope of the Study This study covers Zaria Local Government public senior secondary schools, Kaduna State”, Education Zone and the Community on enhancing effective school plants for students’ academic performance. Due to time factor and financial constrain the researcher limit the research to only some selected public senior secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area , Kaduna State. 1.8 Operational Definition of key Terms Academic performance: It is the outcome of education, the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. Influence: It can be simply refers to as the striking of one thing against another; forceful contact; collision. Also, to have a strong and often bad or positive effect on (something or someone). I.e. Influence of school environment on education of the girl child. School plants: It includes the school building, play-ground, furniture, class-room, library, hostel, apparatus and equipment's, school offices, black-board etc. which are used to achieve the objectives of the school. Students: It is s a learner, or someone who attends an educational institution. Underage school children were always referred to as "pupils", while those attending university are termed "students".
