INTRODUCTION The American philosopher, Ralph Emersons once said that the first wealth is health. Also, the Harvard economist and health expert David E. Bloom in Finance and Developments lead article reminds us that good health is the foundation on which to build a life, a community, and economy. Health and economic development go hand in hand. Whether the focus is on countries or peoples, those with the highest incomes tend to have the highest levels of health and life expectancy. Eight out of the “top ten” countries in terms of per capital income are also in the “top ten” in terms of life expectancy.
