Career is an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress, it is comprised of the different jobs you have held, titles you have earned and work you have accomplished over a long period of time which required special or no training. When viewed in this context, it consists of everything related to your career development. Career is also frequently understood to concern the working aspects of an individual’s life in summary; it is referred to also as a profession, occupation, trade or vocation. Career usually uses your talents or skills while providing fulfillment and a sense of purpose, it could mean working as a Teacher, Electrician, Cashier, Farmer, Doctor, Lawyer, Hairstylist etc. A career defines what you do for a living and from those that require formal education and training to those you could perform with only a high school diploma and a consistent effort to learning. Some see career as the individual’s journey through work, learning and other aspect of life. Growing up as a child in my little village, I had always dreamt of working in the petroleum sector, due to its outstanding working environment and its functionality, but as times goes on, days becoming weeks, weeks becoming months and months becoming years, my course of living and approach towards choosing a career has changed over time, I now see live differently compared to when I was just a boy. Choosing a career requires a clear understanding, focus and patience in the right direction, it is not a decision you make out of enthusiasm or momentary excitement. There are four types of career paths which includes; i. Knowledge-based career path: helps and allow the individual to use the knowledge he or she has acquired over time to do his or her job. ii. Skilled-based career path: deals on the acquisition and application of specific skills and competencies to support individual career growth, it majorly falls into the construction industries as well as artists and performers etc. This approach shows that skills acquired through education, training, practice and experience are often transferable across different industries and work place. 3. Entrepreneur-based career path: focuses on jobs that give you the experience and necessary skills that helps prepare you to start your own business or design and produce your own product. 4. Freelance career path: gives individuals the freedom of working from home, flexible working schedule, working with different client, a better work/life balance and learning from a variety of experience.
