I have always wanted to be among the best and to sound drums so great but I was limited because I lack adequate knowledge but to God be all the glory, I later met a young drum named Dayo, with the result I desire as a drummer and I asked him to teach me what he knows and the secret behind his success in drumming. He simply told me he had mastered 40 rudiments and how to apply them all. He also told me he rehearse frequently. And the last time I checked, I bearly know up to 7 drum rudiments out of the 40 existing drum rudiments, which is very poor. So I took that challenge and worked on 20 drum rudiments first. Only to discover that I am now sounding more like the guy and I could even do more with my uniqueness. The problem with most drummers is that they don't practice and how can you be better if you don't practice ? The only way you can sound drum great, like the drummer you admire, is by being exposed to what he/she knows. And even when many drummers practice, they practice wrongly and waste time without positive results or advancement. Hence this book is written to enlighten drummers. GOODNEWS: You can also change your drumming pattern and style by mastering the 40 drum rudiments and the 40 drum patterns in this mini book. Alright let's get started. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRUM RUDIMENTS AND DRUM PATTERNS ? DRUM RUDIMENTS: They are the basic tools of the drummer. They are the accepted standard in the performance of the basic rhythmic patterns that comprise many of the rhythmic patterns found in the common compositions in Western music. Rudiments are used as exercises for performers to practice and hone their technical skills. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF DRUM RUDIMENTS? Think of the drum rudiments as the “building blocks” of drumming. Their purpose is something roughly equivalent to a pianist or a guitarist learning and practicing their musical scales on their instrument. The rudiments are important to help a drummer develop technique, phrasing, control and coordination on the drums. WHILE... DRUM PATTERNS: Is a rhythmic pattern, or repeated rhythm establishing the meter and groove through the pulse and subdivision, played on drum kits and other percussion instrument. Also it is the systematic, unique and dynamic ways of applying rudiments. KNOWING HOW TO HIT THE DRUMS You can play each drum in a variety of ways. Each gives you a different result. Drummers are responsible for both tempo control (speed) and dynamic control (this is sometimes referred to as volume control, or feel control). There are different types of symbols used to tell the drummer how hard or soft to play, or in what way. 1: STRIKING THE DRUMS There are multiple ways to strike a drum, depending upon the type of grip you’re using. How you grip the sticks determines how the drum will sound when you hit it. You can use a tight or loose grip, and can play using different grip types, such as traditional or matched grip. Be sure to hold the sticks in the correct position and to balance them in your hands comfortably. You don’t always need to strike hard to draw out volume on a drum set; drums are naturally loud. You can use your thumb and index finger to control the stick while using the other fingers to balance out the motion of the stroke.
