Cosmetics: Cosmetics is defined as ‘a substance or preparation intended for placement in contact with any external part of the body’ (this include the mouth and teeth). This preparation involves mixtures of different chemicals components some of which are derived from natural sources and many are synthetics and are used to enhance appearance and prevent odour. Basic Ingredients of Cosmetics Most cosmetics contain the following ingredients: . Thickener .Emulsifier .Preservative .Oil .Water .Colour .Fragrance Thickeners: These are added to cosmetics in order to adjust their consistency. Commonly used thickeners are propylene glycol, nitrosol etc. On the other hand, cosmetics that are too thick could be diluted with water or alcohol as the case may be. Emulsifiers: Emulsifiers are small droplets or oil dispersed in Water and vice versa. Most cosmetics are based on emulsions. Considering that oil and water are immiscible, emulsifiers must be added to ensure the oil and water phases.
